Some very alarming stats regarding 'Broadband Britain' have been published from the Office of National Statistics. Of all the broadband users in the UK only 6.4 per cent have a connection faster than 8Mbps which once you compare to countries like Japan, which has an average connection speed of 63.6Mbps! Unbelievable...can you just imagine how much more business could be done plus how much more enjoyable the whole net experience would be.
We need an optic fibre backbone in the UK NOW! The government, ISPs and industry regulators must get this sorted as this is going to be so detrimental to all types of UK business and drop us even further behind the rest of the world. It must be addressed immediately!!
Do what ever you can to put pressure on the government, email your local mp, whatever....

Nice article.
One of the issues is our old fashioned phone wiring standards inside the house for extensions, even in modern houses, left as a hang over from the days of the old Bell Telephones, not widely publised but easily fixed see....

... might give you another 0.5 to 1Mbs whilst we await the big telecoms to do something....
You can help yourself here a "little" at least by removing the bell wire it self, it does a similar thing to the i-plate from BT which just seems to choke it, see Bell Wire Blog for simple instructions or google for "Bell wire removal" - gave it a go and my sync speed shot up from 3.7 to 4.6Mbs as soon as I disconnected it and restarted my router, and my other phones seem fine. I suggest you give it a go, whilst we await a fibre rollout!
Still looking for ways to get my full 8mb I pay for!!
