It's time to Wise Up to Wyzo!

I've just started using a new web browser, Wyzo that's been built around Firefox so it should look familiar to lot's of you. It's simple homepage lets you search 33 different engines from the same screen via a drop-down box. There are different engines on offer for different categories, so whether its web, torrents, images, video etc. you'll have plenty of choice. One great feature is the integrated ability to download torrents with just one click.
I know that BitTorrent gets a lot of bad press, however it can be used to download any type of file and there are a lot of great torrent files to download.
In additon, if you prefer, you can just add the FireTorrent and Wyzo start page to your Firefox browser as an add-on by going to www.wyzo.com/downloads and setting http://start.wyzo.com as your homepage. Enjoy......

Is the Windows firewall working?

I'm running Windows XP and like most i've got the Windows Firewall turned on. But is it working? The best way to find out is to log all the activity and then analyse the results and see if you can find out who's been trying to hack into your PC and what connections they have made.
- Go to the Control Panel and open the Windows Firewall
- Click the Advanced Tab and the the Settings Button under Security Logging
- Change the path if you wish of the log file, plus tick the two options to Log dropped packets and any successful connections
You can cut and paste the log into Notepad/Wordpad and take a look but I must admit I didn't find it that easy to decipher. Googling it came up with the following cool Windows XP Firewall Logger which clearly shows you who's friend or foe!
Secure your PHP forms with Captcha's....

When creating any form for your users to complete online, such as a contact form or blog response there is always a possibility of having a non-human visitor trying to complete it. If it's not spammers attempting to hijack your mail() functionality it could be automatic registration systems that are there to stuff your database with junk entries. Captchas are a great way to distinguish real people from machines. What is a Captcha? It's an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart"
To get started, go to http://captchas.net/ to register free for an account. You will see that they have provided sample code plus a downloadable class for use with PHP, Perl, ASP, Python and JSP. I use PHP so I can include the PHP class into my contact.php form very simply. Just edit a couple of lines in the contact.php file and hey presto you have a captcha appear on the form that will be served up afresh, everytime the form is accessed.
For a full article on all the aspects of the coding see the Tutorial section of Web Designer mag isse no.133 and capture your clients data with a cool 'Captcha!'...
Fancy a bit of 3D Surfing?

I've just been introduced to a new way of browsing the net. SpaceTime the final frontier! No just a cool way of displaying web pages and search results in a 3D space. This application is very like the latest Vista Flip task-switching system and allows you to move through web pages like a stack of documents. It can be used with a variety of sites including Google, Yahoo, Flickr and Ebay(US Version only though!). The only downside is that it's very memory hungry so I'm not sure about maintaining it as a permanent feature.
Give SpaceTime a spin and enjoy the journey!
Windows Explorer in tabbed browser style- "Yes please!"

The latest generation of web browsers have brought us tabbed browsing that has revolutionised the way we surf the net, allowing us to open multiple web sites without cluttering the task bar. This essential facility is now available for Windows Explorer thanks to a small program called QT TabBar. Follow this procedure:-
- Download the zip file at http://tinyurl.com/2w4uff and extract it to an appropriate folder
- Once installed and rebooted you can open Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E) and in the toolbar, right mouse the options labelled QT TabBar and QT Tab Standard Buttons
- Navigate through the tabs easily
- Create new groups and utilise the toolbar buttons
- Note that you can password your folders
- Modify the options to save settings for the next time you open it
- Hovering over a folder gives you a cool arrow icon that show subfolders and files
It's quick to setup and I'm now enjoying the tabbed environment in WE as well as IE!
