Shred those sensitive files...

I've just found another cool piece of software called UltraShredder. This is a small standalone file that can be run off a USB memory drive and deletes sensitive files by overwriting them with a selection of random characters. This process bypasses the Recycle Bin and if it was recovered by a data recovery program it would show up as a jumble of unrecognosed characters.
A great personal and portable file shredder!

I'd be wary of entrusting your security to such a program unless you have known validations against bruteforce attack hardware that can retrieve data from a hard drive with no prior knowledge.
To take the shredder analogy further, you need a cross-mesh that basically minces the data and then a large brazier within which you can burn the shreddies. Once they're nicely turned to ash you then want to bury them in your compost heap.
Even then there could still be scraps of data that might be plucked from a single composted shred that, like a DNA, sample could be retrieved.
More to the point, no amount of shredding will protect any of your personal data that is on a CD-ROM lost by the government somewhere...
