FTP tips and tricks and servers!
0 Comments Published by ITSGUI Man on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at 9:36 AM.
If you are contemplating starting up a website or you are a regular downloader you will need an FTP program. File Transfer Protocol is a means of downloading and uploading files to and from the internet. If you have a web site you can transfer the files that you've created on your computer to a web host's server.
When it comes to FTP software you can pay for a commercial program or use a free alternative or if you have Dreamweaver you use the built-in FTP option. Check out Cute FTP and also Coffee Cup FTP.
You can also use Internet Explorer by just adding ftp://yourname.com into the address bar. You will be prompted for the username and password and will see the content of your web space, where you can drag-and-drop files just like other folders.
If you would like to create an FTP server where you can share large files, rather than emailing them as attachments, this is alos easy to setup. Try a copy of War FTP Daemon which is free and easy to setup. Once your server is configured you will need to provide people with you IP address. As most ISP's serve you up a new one each time you logo on, you might find it useful to sign up for a free account. Try dyndns.com!
Happy transferring!!!

fancy a Coast to Coast Adventure across Costa Rica?

I have just launched a charity site for one of my clients Michael Scott, who's a member of the Team Pythians who will be doing a Coast to Coast trip across Costa Rica in March 2007. Check out crossingcostarica.com where you can find out about the team, their motives, their chosen charity (the Prince's Trust) and how the training is coming along.
Just thought I would let you know of some cool web searching tips that will help you find what you're looking for...
Wildcards - use a wildcard operator to replace a missing word. In Google this is an asterisk(*) eg. "Fast * Magazine"
Use quotes - if you're looking for a specific phrase, put quotes around it. The search engine will treat the phrase as a whole.
Boolean Searches - use Boolean logical commands such as AND, OR and NOT. eg. Blair AND Bush
Try Metasearching - use a metasearch site instead of trying multiple search engines. These sites fetch the results of your search from the main search engines, remove any duplicates and then analyse the results. Try dogpile.com or metacrawler.com
Lastly, try a cool tool called Quintura Search that will run your query through Google, Yahoo and MSN then display the results in a split window, results on the right and words on the left. You can then filter the results clicking on the relevant words.
Here endeth the searching lesson.....

How to move with MouseKeys!

There's a handy feature in Windows XP that many people are not aware of called MouseKeys. It lets you move the mouse cursor around using the keys on the keyboard and is very helpful should something happen to the mouse. To access MouseKeys, go into the Control Panel and select Accessibility Options, then click on the Mouse tab. Select the Use MouseKeys option and click OK. This now allows you to control the cursor using the arrow keys: Up - tap or hold 8 key on the numeric pad, left - 4, right - 6 and down - 2. To left click press the 5 key and right click press the minus sign and then the 5 key. Check that Num Lock is ON!
Adding Artwork to you iTunes music collection...
0 Comments Published by ITSGUI Man on Friday, September 08, 2006 at 2:16 PM.
I've just recently purchased an iPod (about blo*** time I hear you say; first to get the latest technology, me!) from eBay and have commenced feeding it with my cool tracks (well most of them, just a few dodgy one's in there...), transferring and converting them as necessary via iTunes. What I was missing was a way to easily import the Album Artwork as iTunes stores it differently to Media Player. I've stumbled across a real cool piece of software called, believe it or not 'iTunes Art Importer'. This is a superb tool that only requires the installation of Microsoft .NET Framework and once setup, is so easy to use.
Get a copy now at www.yvg.com/itunesartimporter.shtml you won't be disappointed and your iPod will love it!

Fed up with the Explorer E or Firefox logo displaying in your address bar? Then create your own Favicon.ico and complete the brand look of your site. All you have to do is create a graphic, either an image, shape or letters that's 16 x 16 pixels and save it as a .ICO file and ftp it up to your root web folder, where your index page resides. Job done!!
The best tool for the job that I've found is irFanView which you can download for free at www.irfanview.com

Removing Spam & Junk via Outlook plus a FormMail script
0 Comments Published by ITSGUI Man on at 10:44 AM.
What a nightmare the world of spam emails can be! Having just recovered from a spammer who sent a 180Mb attachment to one of my clients and completely froze the email server, here's a few tips to try and catch the Spam using Outlook.
Set up a new folder called Spam and then utilise the Rules & Alerts option to build a set of rules. ie. if subject line contains the word 'Viagra' then dump it in the Spam folder. I have about 20 rules in place and now along with the Junk Email filter option this is capturing about 95% of the rubbish! A quick check over the Junk and Spam folders to make sure that nothing of importance slipped through the net and then just delete the folder contents. Job done!
Another thing to watch is using cgi scripts to run online contact forms, such as mailform.pl. These can be hijacked by Spammers who use them to send out the spam time and time again. You can get a great script from Script Archive that plugs spam related security issues.
