FTP tips and tricks and servers!

If you are contemplating starting up a website or you are a regular downloader you will need an FTP program. File Transfer Protocol is a means of downloading and uploading files to and from the internet. If you have a web site you can transfer the files that you've created on your computer to a web host's server.
When it comes to FTP software you can pay for a commercial program or use a free alternative or if you have Dreamweaver you use the built-in FTP option. Check out Cute FTP and also Coffee Cup FTP.
You can also use Internet Explorer by just adding ftp://yourname.com into the address bar. You will be prompted for the username and password and will see the content of your web space, where you can drag-and-drop files just like other folders.
If you would like to create an FTP server where you can share large files, rather than emailing them as attachments, this is alos easy to setup. Try a copy of War FTP Daemon which is free and easy to setup. Once your server is configured you will need to provide people with you IP address. As most ISP's serve you up a new one each time you logo on, you might find it useful to sign up for a free account. Try dyndns.com!
Happy transferring!!!
